It was an epic coming together of the Goffers today at BGC, in the 2007/8 Winter League. Captain Hook and Mini Driver eventually overcome Very Old Bill and Major Villan by 1 hole after an titanic struggle match in very windy and wet conditions.
The scene was set by V.O.B from the start with a gross par on the first to go one up. After halving the second with a six ( which be only only one of 2 sixes for the whole round), Cap'n Hook pared the third to even the match. From then on even pars were not good enough to win holes. Mini Driver halved the 5th and 6th to a bogey and a par and then won the par 3 7th with a 4, to put them one up. Major Villan won the 8th with a 5 to halve the match and Very Old Bill went on to par the 9th which put the young Villan and the old boy one up at the turn. With 5 pars on the front 9 and a gross 35 between the four of them, more fireworks were expected on the back 9.
Villan won the 10th with a bogey and then we witnessed one of the greatest turnarounds seen at BGC. Cap'n Hook set the scene for a remarkable come back with a 4 at the 11th to win the hole. Villan and Old Bill then lost concentration and confidence to lose the next 4 holes to some very good golf by Cap'n Hook and Mini Driver in very stormy weather, to go 3 down and dormie after a 15.
With Very Old Bill the only one to cross the water at 16, Hook and Driver conceded the hole. Villan pared the 17th to win the hole, which resulted in Mini Driver and Cap'n Hook needing only a halve on the 18th to win the match. All over, not on your life, after some nervous drives, Villan played a superb 9 iron, pin high for 4. Hook replied with a wedge, which went slightly long, leaving him a chip of 12ft back to the hole. Hook chipped stone dead for a six, leaving Villan a long 15 footer to win the hole. His putt ended inches from the hole , but not before giving Driver and Hook the shock of their lives. What a cracker, with each team member making a contribution.
Well it looks like last years beaten semi finalists, Villan and Old Bill will not qualify this time around. It will be down to the team of Hook and Driver with John Powell going very well in Lge A to fly the Goffers flag, this year.
